In this work, De Heem creates a harmonious arrangement by balancing the colours and shapes of many types of flowers. De Heem often included specific animals and flowers in his work for their symbolic meaning.

Jan Davidsz De Heem (1606 - 1684) was a Dutch painter famed for his Baroque floral paintings. De Heem was considered one of the greatest still life painters of his time. Today, his works are in the collections of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Louvre Museum in Paris, the National Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others.
